Rearing 3 children in the Eastern Cape, South Africa has subsequently lead me to make stronger statements about cultural goodness and its atrocities, specifically among children and women. These works are often laced with deeper meanings which are not apparent initially.

Among these social commentary works, I create quirky ridiculous works, like dogs in high heel shoes as well as doing client driven commissions and enjoy these processes as much.

This is the oldest dwelling in Port Elizabeth in its original state. It was built by the Rev Francis McCleland in 1827, having purchased the land for three pounds and three shillings. The museum is set out as a home representing domestic life between 1840 and 1870.

There are many interesting items on display including a Toy Museum with a wonderful collection of dolls. The original well is still working in the cobbled courtyard. Children are well catered for with the Fairy garden and a Treasure Hunt.

‘Old’ Port Elizabeth is truly captured in the ambience of the building and the interior.

Between 1994 and 2004, this acclaimed multi-cultural choir enjoyed numerous national and international invitations and successes, performing before President Nelson Mandela, Queen Elizabeth II and participating in the FICU International University Choir Festival, Valencia (Spain), the Centennial Celebrations of Philippines and the Voices International Choir Festival in Trondheim (Norway). In 2000 the Choir featured in a film based on the life of Nelson Mandela commissioned by Norway and filmed on Robben Island.

In 2007 the NMMU Choir performed in Jacksonville, Florida (a Port Elizabeth sister city) as well as with Chicago Children’s Choir and the Lyric Opera Orchestra at the Civic Theatre, Chicago, for the world premiere of Windy City Songs by South African composer Péter Louis van Dijk. They also performed at the Ravinia Festival (Chicago) and in Hyde Park (New York State). In 2008 the choir performed Vivaldi’s Gloria and Van Dijk’s Windy City Songs with both the Cape Philharmonic Orchestra (Cape Town) and the Eastern Cape Philharmonic Orchestra (Port Elizabeth) under the baton of Péter Louis van Dijk.

The choir won the 2009 choir competition in Spittal-an-der-Drau, Austria and was highly acclaimed by all who attended. They also won the publicum prize as the most liked choir by the concert attendees. In 2010 they were invited to partake in prestigious Fabbrica Del Canto Choir Competition in Northern Italy. As no university funding was available, the choir costs were fully sponsored by the organizers. Once again they were singled out as one of the top performances. (They also performed at the opening of the FIFA World Cup activities in Milano before the Sky news, BBC, RA 1 and regional television stations). The choir has cut one very successful CD/DVD and are presently doing another DVD for release by June.

This year the choir is very privileged to be selected as one of 24 choirs (chosen from 120 choirs from five continents) as the ONLY choir from South Africa to perform at the prestigious IFCM’s 9th World Choral Symposium in Puerto Madryn, Argentina in August 2011. This is one of the most important events on the international choral calendar and is scheduled every 3 years in a different country and preferably a different continent. More recently the choir received an invitation as one of five choirs (each from a different continent) to represent Africa at the 11th China International Choral Festival and IFCM World Choral Summit in Beijing, China in July 2012. The theme of this global initiative will be Voices in Harmony.

The Choir has a CD/DVD and will release a new DVD by the end of June 2011. The choir is directed by the well-known conductor and academic, Junita Lambrecht van Dijk and resorts under the Department of Marketing and Corporate Relations at NMMU.

In 1891, a group of Port Elizabeth businessmen met to draw up the articles of a company to be formed for the purpose of erecting a theatre which would meet the needs of the rapidly-growing city. George William Smith, the city’s leading architect, was given the task of designing the building; and a Mr. Felden of the Lyceum Theatre, London, was brought in to design the stage and the interior in the plush-and-gilt style of the period. The new building was opened on 1 December 1892. It preceded the railway line by two years and it took 16 more years before artificial lighting – in the form of Gas – came to The Opera House. In the mean time it was lighted by candles and limelight. When the theatre opened it was recognised as ‘The finest theatre in all the World’ according to press reports.

The theatre was first leased to the Wheeler Brothers, entrepreneurs who used to bring overseas companies to perform in South Africa. The opening play was J. M. Barrie’s (Peter Pan). Some years after the Opera House was erected the building was altered to allow back-drops and scenery to be ‘flown’ and the rear of the building was altered to facilitate loading and unloading of scenery and ‘props’.

After World War II, films appeared to be the paramount interest of the owners, African Consolidated Theatre, but several promoters brought back live theatre – Brian Brooke, Pieter Toerien and Brickhill/Burke. Despite this revival it was decided to dispose of the Opera House and this sparked off a movement for the purchase of the building as a civic theatre. The support of other theatrical societies was enlisted and eventually the Provincial Administration stepped in and bought the building, chiefly with the idea of using it as a venue for performances by the recently established Cape Performing Arts Board (CAPAB), but also making it available to professional and amateur companies. It was thoroughly renovated, the facilities improved and at a glittering function on 14 November, 1967 it was officially opened with a performance of Swan Lake by CAPAB Ballet.

In 1994 the whole South African landscaped changed dramatically after the release of Nelson Mandela and the first democratically elected Government took over the reins. After the publication of the White Paper on the Arts the Opera House became a Section 21 Company with funding from the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture in Bhisho, who is also the legal owner of the Building.

The Opera House is a very special Theatre and has hosted performances by household icons such as John Kani, Athol Fugard, Winston Ntshona, Nomsa Nkonyeni, and many, many other famous national and international stars. It was officially nominated a receiving house for hosting productions only, however, with the consent of the Board of Directors a large part of its budget is devoted to development programmes.

The festival is a first for the friendly city with a star studded line up including internationally renowned jazz guitarist George Benson and South Africa’s very own legend, Hugh Masekela. Other artists set to perform on the day includes Freshly Ground, Jamali with special guest Loyiso Bala, GoodLuck, Goldfish, Prime Circle, Fohloza, New Afro Teens, and the Nelson Mandela Bay Big Band featuring Feya Faku.

The festival is set to become an annual event that plans to showcase what Port Elizabeth and the Eastern Cape has to offer as an international music venue.

The festival events include a free community concert on Vuyisile Mini Square (Market Square)on Friday, 13 May 2011. Artist performing at the Free Concert include Hugh Masekela, Goldfish, Belinda Davids, MoJazz and Down by Law. Various Training and Development takes place at the City Hall on Thursday and Friday.
